Industrial Relations Centre has a New Queen's Partner

(May 1, 2004) The IRC has a new “home” at Queen's University: the esteemed and innovative School of Policy Studies.

Established in 1937, the IRC has long been affiliated with the School of Industrial Relations (SIR). In 2003, the SIR merged with the School of Policy Studies in order to concentrate resources and offer graduate students a greater range of interdisciplinary programs. At that point, discussions were launched to also bring the IRC under the Policy Studies umbrella. There are a number of benefits in mind: the IRC will be affiliated with a well-established academic unit at Queen's, and the outreach efforts of the School of Policy Studies will be boosted by the IRC's success in delivering practitioner programs.

In fact, plans are afoot for the IRC and Policy Studies to jointly deliver training programs to the public service in Ottawa, among a range of possible collaborative ventures.

“There is quite an exciting upside to this marriage of the Centre and the School of Policy Studies,” says Dr. Carol Beatty, IRC Director. “We see it as an opportunity to bring our training to new audiences, and to tap the great strength of the School's Faculty and Fellows to add to our web site publishing program.”

As a result of the integration, which took effect May 1, 2004, the IRC will have a revitalized research program, beginning with a Call for Papers and symposium on high performing professional teams.

Queen's School of Policy Studies is one of Canada's leading academic centres in the broad area of public policy. It offers the highly regarded Master in Public Administration and Professional Master of Public Administration. As a result of an active visiting Fellows and conference programs, the SPS is a link between the world of research and the realities of government.
