IRC Sponsors Inaugural Case Competition
Pit a number of keen, and competitive, graduate students from three universities against one another in a labour relations case competition and watch the sparks fly.
That is just what happened at the inaugural International Negotiations Cup Competition March 1, 2008, involving Master of Industrial Relations students from Queen’s and the University of Toronto as well as graduate students from Cornell’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations. The Competition, sponsored by Queen’s IRC, was the capstone of a two-day learning and networking event that attracted more than 50 students from Canada and the U.S..
On day one of the event, students discussed current labour relations trends, and heard from Queen’s Professor Pradeep Kumar and Canadian Autoworkers Union (CAW) National Representative Ron Smith on the controversial agreement between the CAW and Magna International. In November 2007, the union and giant auto parts manufacturer signed the Framework of Fairness, which stipulates that if workers in individual plants accept the union as their bargaining agent, there would be no strikes. Binding arbitration will instead be used to settle differences that might normally lead to a picket line.
On day two, teams from each university competed in a complex, multi-party negotiations exercise, with students from theUniversity of Toronto taking home the new inter-university negotiations competition cup. “It was really impressive to see the students, who are tomorrow’s labour relations leaders, excel at handling this real-world case,” says Paul Juniper, Director of Queen’s Industrial Relations Centre who was on hand to present the trophy to the winning team. ”The IRC is proud to sponsor the competition and we look forward to next year’s event.”
Queen’s MIR program has a long-standing commitment to teaching and research in labour relations and human resource management. It is a 12- month professional program with a practitioner focus, designed to prepare students for a variety of career opportunities.
Established in 1937, Queen’s IRC is Canada’s leading university management development unit for practitioners in labour relations, human resource management, and organizational development.
