Buzz Hargrove on the State of the Unions

“The Current State and Future Prospects of Labour Relations”

The 2006 Spring Don Wood Lecture by Basil “Buzz” Hargrove

Date: March 16, 2006 at 4 p.m.

Location: Policy Studies Building ( Union at Alfred Street ), Room 202

Queen's University Campus, Kingston ON

Basil “Buzz” Hargrove, national president of the National Automobile, Aerospace, Transportation and General Workers' Union of Canada (CAW-Canada), will be offering his perspective on labour relations in Canada as part of the Don Wood Visiting Lectureship.

Hargrove has been a dynamic figure on the Canadian labour scene for decades. He has been re-elected as leader of the CAW, the largest private sector union in the country, every three years since 1992. He is also Vice-President on the executive committee of the Canadian Labour Congress.

Born into rural poverty in New Brunswick , Hargrove began his career as an autoworker with Windsor 's Local 444, and held several elected local positions before joining the union's staff in 1975. In 1978, he became assistant to Bob White, then the Canadian director of the United Auto Workers (UAW).

Hargrove has extensive bargaining experience and a fascination for the economic, social and political issues affecting workers and their families in Canada and internationally. In 1998, he co-authored (with Wayne Skene) the book Labour of Love:The Fight to Create a More Humane Canada . He holds honorary doctorates from Brock University , University of Windsor and Wilfred Laurier University .

The Don Wood Visiting Lectureship in Industrial Relations is organized by the Queen's University Industrial Relations Centre and Master of Industrial Relations ( MIR ) Program, School of Policy Studies . It features distinguished individuals, such as Hargrove, who have made an important contribution to industrial relations in Canada or abroad.

The lectureship was established by friends of Dr. W. Donald Wood to honour his outstanding contributions to Canadian industrial relations. Dr. Wood was Professor Emeritus, Queen's University, a former Director of the Industrial Relations Centre (1960-85), and the first Director of the School of Industrial Relations (1983-85).
