Queen's IRC Symposium Papers Now Online

Papers presented at a research symposium organized by Queen’s Industrial Relations Centre (IRC) on Oct. 12, 2005 have now been published in the IRC’s online Knowledge Centre.

The Symposium on High Performance Professional Teams was organized to address an area of increasing significance. Extensive research has already shown that effective implementation of self-managing work teams in manufacturing enterprises confer advantages in both efficiency and performance. Relatively little research, however, has addressed the dynamics, development, and performance of multidisciplinary teams composed of groups of professionals.

The Symposium attracted original papers from three Queen’s University research teams: A Meta-Analysis of the Virtual Teams Literature, by A. Ortiz de Guinea, J. Webster, and S. Staples from the School of Business; High Performance Teams in Primary Care: The Basis of Interdisciplinary Collaborative Care, by D. Delva and M. Jamieson from the Department of Family Medicine and the School of Rehabilitation Therapy; and Incentive Pay, Teams and Earnings: Evidence from Toronto Firms, by C. Riddell from the School of Policy Studies.

Each year, Queen’s IRC hosts an academic symposium related to one of three research themes: dispute resolution; change; and teams. The symposium is designed to bring together academics engaged in the relevant research as well as a broader audience of scholars, researchers, students, senior practitioners, and government representatives. The main objectives of the symposium are to share new research findings, emphasize the practical significance of the research and how it contributes to the existing base of knowledge, discuss the impact and implications of the research for theory, practice and policy, and to stimulate further research.
